We have had this species under cultivation for eleven years and it is very thrifty, has a long blooming period, and is one of the best phloxes for cultivation. Found locally on open, wooded slopes and on wooded flood plains of streams in a few of the Ohio River Counties.

Much like no. 7 [Phlox paniculata L.]; lvs wider and usually hirsutulous above; infl and cal conspicuously glandular-hairy; cor red-purple, 1.5-2 cm wide, its tube glabrous; anthers usually included; 2n=14. Woods; s. Ind. to Mo., s. to w. N.C. and Ala. June-Sept.
