Flowering stems erect, 1.5-4 dm; lvs linear to lanceolate, to 12 cm, the upper much smaller, those of the sterile shoots evergreen; infl a compact cyme, glandular-hairy as also the cal and cor-tube; cor purple, 15-25 mm wide; 2n=28. Shale-barrens; Va. and W.Va. May-June.
