Erect or spreading, rhizomatous perennial 2-5 dm; pubescence of the upper parts, including the petioles, pedicels, and lower lf-surfaces dense to less often sparse, rough to the touch, composed of loose or spreading, rather short hairs once or twice dichotomously forked; lvs lance-ovate to elliptic, 4-8 cm, entire or merely undulate, long-cuneate to the base and decurrent as a narrow wing along the petiole; pedicels at an thesis 1-2.5 cm, later sometimes to 3-5 cm; cal hirsute, its lobes triangular, notably longer than wide; cor 12-17 mm, usually only faintly or scarcely blotched within; filaments dilated; anthers 2.5-3.5 mm; fruiting cal ovoid, 2-3 cm, retuse at base; 2n=24. Prairies, and sometimes in disturbed habitats, as along railroads; Ill. and Mo. to Neb., Tex., and Ark. Summer.
