Culms 5-12 dm, compressed below, without rhizomes; sheaths compressed, rough, the uppermost much elongate; ligule truncate, 1 mm; blades 6-10 mm wide, abruptly narrowed at the tip; infl elongate, the lower branches in 5's; spikelets 4-5-fld; first glume 2-3 mm, 1-veined, the second 3-4 mm, 3-veined; lemmas sharply 5-veined, scabrous on the veins and sometimes also between them, not webbed; rachilla glabrous or nearly so; 2n=14. N. Europe; locally intr. with us, as in N.Y., and about Duluth, Minn.
