Cauline leaves (at least some) 3-lobed. Discs 10-15 mm diam. Ray laminae 8-17 mm. 2n = 38, ca. 57, 57.

Flowering Jul-Oct. Mesic to wet woodlands, thickets, pastures, roadsides, meadows; 20-300 m; Ont., Que.; Ala., Ark., Colo., Conn., Del., Ga., Ill., Ind., Iowa, Kans., Ky., La., Md., Mass., Mich., Minn., Miss., Mo., Nebr., N.J., N.Y., N.C., Ohio, Okla., Pa., Tenn., Tex., Utah, Vt., Va., W.Va., Wis.

Variety triloba is introduced in Canada.

Infrequent, but usually in large colonies in the open or wooded, moist banks of streams and in moist wooded ravines. Throughout the state although there are no reports or specimens from the northern counties.
