Much like no. 24 [Salix humilis Marshall], but less common and smaller in all respects; shrub to 1 m, with exstipulate, narrowly oblanceolate lvs mostly 2-5 cm נ7-10(-12) mm; petioles 0.5-3 mm; staminate catkins 0.5-1.2 cm, the pistillate ones 1-2 cm at maturity. Dry open places, often in more exposed habitats than no. 24; Me. to Minn., s. to S.C., Ga., La., and Okla. (S. tristis; S. humilis var. microphylla).
